Commitments, Dreams and Pythagoras

Regis McKenna, Steve Jobs’ first marketing consultant at Apple and Chairman of the Board at the Santa Clara University Center for Science, had an interesting monogram inscribed on his business card.  It read: “Regis McKenna – Himself.”  Mckenna’s message was simple.  Of all his responsibilities, his greatest responsibility to the world was to be himself.

Full Commitments and Fear

McKenna also understood that meaningful contributions to anything – whether to yourself, a relationship, a group or an organization, require a full commitment.  Half commitments are destined to lead to a state of frustration and unfulfillment.

Yet it’s so difficult for many of us to make full commitments.  It’s as if we’re running away from fear, rather than running toward a dream.

Your World and Your Business

How many things do you really give a full commitment to in your world?  Is a full commitment on your part impeded by poor time management or lack of motivation?  Or do you become anxious at the thought of a full commitment to anything?

Perhaps a greater focus on the things that inspire you is the solution.  Warren Buffet attributes much of his success to delegation.  He encourages, “Delegate almost to the point of abdication.”  He proudly explains that he speaks with the heads of the companies that he owns no more than once a year.  Delegating allows you to streamline your business and for you to make your strengths the focal point of your day.

The Spice of Life

Commitment to whatever drives you is one of the spices of life.  If a venture is not worth a full commitment, then it’s not worth engaging at all.  As so succinctly suggested by Pythagoras, “Rest satisfied with doing well, and leave others to talk of you as they please.”

What inspires you to make a full commitment?

What brings you gratification without one?
