Authenticity

I had dinner with a friend this evening and we talked about many topics.  One of the things that we discussed was the way in which we as human beings make things so complicated, when most often there is really no need to.  She and I have known each other forever, and somehow the fact that our relationship is purely spiritual allows a genuineness that is far from prevalent in the universe today.

Organic

She commented that she attributes this to the degree of comfort that we feel in maintaining authenticity in one another’s company.  “All one needs to do to find true happness with oneself is to remain authentic,” she mused.  I was about to say, “Authentic and organic,” but low and behold she said it first.”

Can’t Have it Both Ways

Earlier today I spoke with a colleague about the degree of stress that seemingly most all of our clients feel due to the adjustment that the economy has made over the past five years or so.  We as Realtors feel it more today than ever as we progress into the most active season for buyers and sellers alike.  But we can’t have it both ways.  If we are driven to help our clients find the right buyer or property, then we can be sure that in such instances the euphoria of our match making will often be tempered by a large degree of anxiety.  It certainly beats the alternative.

Happiness

It remains one of life’s great mysteries that we find it so difficult to follow our instincts and to be natural.  We can allay most of our client’s fears if we weren’t so concerned about the peripheral nuances that seem to make their way into every transaction if we allow them to.  The recipe to providing your clients with what they need, in all business endeavors, doesn’t need to be that complicated.

  • Know what their goals are.
  • Have a plan and implement it.
  • Don’t allow yourself to be distracted.
  • Refuse to get involved with the drama of the day.
  • Don’t allow yourself to be defined by the comments of others.
  • Guide your clients with your best advice, based not on what they want to hear but what they need to hear.

When your job is over there’s one thing that engenders peace of mind more than anything else.  It’s knowing that you remained authentic throughout your experience.

“Authenticity is your greatest asset. Lose your authenticity and you’ve lost everything,” Marcus Buckingham.

When do you find it difficult to remain authentic in business situations?

What can you do to change that?
