Creating Your Future

A mistake that’s often made by those attempting to create their future is doing so by trying to re-create their past.  While it’s certainly beneficial to learn from events of the past, history doesn’t often repeat itself, in life or in business.  Moreover, circumstances change, and often experiences that you’ve had in the past have no relevance to those of the future.  There’s a reason that so many leaders who are successful advise others to implement their business strategy sooner rather than later, even if it’s not perfect.  Too much can change between now and the time that you’re ready.  Consequently, waiting for perfection is oxymoronic.  There is seldom an absolutely perfect time for anything.  Accomplished entreprenuers implement, then create and develop around the imperfections.

Creating vs. Planning

This perspective is one of the reasons that this blog post is entitled “creating your future” rather than “planning your future.”  Planners, those who think things out from many different angles, typically struggle in real estate and many other businesses.  Planning suggests inaction, creating is action.  Passive vs. active behavior.

Embracing Surprise

A friend recently commented, “You don’t like surprises, you like “good” surprises.”  She’s right.  And  that’s something that I’ve worked on of late.  Oh make no mistake, I will continue to be enthralled with those surprises whereby the good is evident.   But I’ve also been searching harder to find the good in those surprises where the good is not so evident, at least at the onset.  It’s made a huge difference for me and has exposed me to opportunities, both on a business and personal level, that I otherwise would not have recognized.

Moving Forward

For many of us in real estate, the time is now.  The Spring of 2013 portends to be an exciting one for Realtors.  Understand that the activities you engage in today have huge implications regarding the plight of your business in the Spring.  As you acknowledge this and attempt to create your future, keep in mind how dramatically the landscape is changing.  Don’t make the mistake of trying to pave the way for your future by re-creating the past.

How good are you at embracing surprises of all kinds?

Has failure to do so made a difference in your life?
