I heard about it in the mid-1990’s. About Microsoft and the “lions” that were coming over the mountain. That the real estate industry was about to change forever and that the Realtors’ utility would become extinct.
Yes and No
Well it’s fifteen plus years later and the industry has certainly undergone a dramatic upheaval as a consequence of the internet explosion. As Realtors, however, we’ve all learned that while our function has changed, our functionality hasn’t. No longer the “gatekeepers” of information, our role has become no less significant. Home buyers and sellers need our guidance and expertise on many, many fronts during the entire process.
Increased Commitment
Due to the many changes in the dynamics of buying and selling real estate, including changes in laws and the economy, it takes a greater commitment on behalf of the Realtor than ever before. The vetting process for chosing a realtor has become more sophisticated, our clients expect more and the “top of the class” delivers it. We are more knowlegeable on a variety of real estate related topics and more skilled at negotiating than anytime in real estate history.
Part-Time Realtor
One thing dawned on me as I was finishing a blog on leadership that I read daily entitled Leadership Freak. I was questioning in my mind how the author is able to be so consistent in churning out his posts everyday, seven days a week. I wondered if this is actually his main endeavor everyday – in other words his full time job. Whether that’s the case or not, it inspired thoughts of the demands on today’s Realtors as written above, and how very few part-time realtors have maintained their viability in Fairfield County, Ct. Perhaps that is the case in your neighborhood also.
And so while the Realtor has done anything but become extinct due to the aforementioned “lions,” the expectations of the public have clearly made an dramatic impact on our industry. The death knoll of the part-time realtor has surely been tolled.
How has the part-time realtor been affected in your area?
