Father’s Day Inspiration

Though Father’s Day has come and gone, for me its memory will forever leave an indelible impression on my mind.

The First Born

As the activities of my youngest boy become more demanding of my time, my first born Ryan is becoming more independent with his own activities.  Hence it was really special when he asked me to join him for a round of golf – as he did last year.  An afternoon shared by just the two of us.

Gorgeous

The weather was gorgeous, and after a scenic bike ride and great lunch with a friend, I was ready for more outdoor activity.

A bonding occurs when a father is engaged in an outdoor sport with an offspring that’s difficult to explain.  Whether golfing, fishing , playing catch, shooting hoops or whatever.  Particularly if your relationship is solid, all defenses seem to disappear.  We had an extremely enjoyable time together.  I was impressed that many of the club members, of both sexes, added to the goodwill of this special day with their own well wishes.

A Big Heart

Ryan has always had a big heart, and the first thing that he asked as we got into the car after finishing our round was if we could visit his grandpa’s grave – my father.  Although I’m sure that it’s obvious to many, it hit me right then and there that once you have children, you are in the middle of two celebrations on father’s day – one for you and one for your father.  Obvious, yet  our generation places so much emphasis on our children that it sometimes is at the expense of our own parents.  My first born gave me a cold splash of reality.

A Decorated Hero

A decorated hero of World War II, it’s the valor and sacrifice of veterans like my dad that have provided my sons and I with the freedom to enjoy the things that we do.  And at sixteen Ryan is well aware of that fact.

Back At Work

It’s now Monday and I am back at work.  But not without a renewed sense of purpose.  Days like yesterday serve as a great reminder of one of the many benefits that a chosen career can afford.  The resources and opportunity to spend time doing what you love to do with those that you love.  That’s unequivocally the jolt of inspiration that I received yesterday on Father’s Day.
What inspiration did you receive on Father’s Day?
