Independence

After a great July 4th holiday, I sit at my computer and think of the true meaning of independence.  Not Independence Day, which most Americans know celebrates the day that America declared its independence from Great Britain.  But individual independence.  Is it someone who is in a position to do what they want, when they want?  Or is that freedom?  And was rock icon Janis Joplin correct when she bellowed in her distinctly raspy voice, “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose?”

A Business Perspective

From a business perspective, independence seems to be a by-product of leverage.  A Realtor creates leverage through sheer numbers.  The greater number of motivated clients that a Realtor works with, the less likely the Realtor is to put themselves in a position of disappointing clients who are not motivated.  Thus, that Realtor creates an independence from working with such a client.  The age old adage, “If you generate you don’t have to tolerate,” sure rings true in the business world.

Balance

I suppose it’s similar to many things in life.  Balance is the key.  Become too dependent on a certain group or individual and you set yourself up for major disappointment.  Become too independent and there will be a time when the void for the emotional support that we all need from others will be more than one cares to bear.

It would be nice if my dad were here to discuss it.  Nothing like having a conversation with those who are responsible for America’s ability to maintain our independence in the first place – America’s servicemen and women.  Joplin is no longer here either.  Perhaps I’ll just call a friend and listen to what they have to say about the matter.  Yes, I’ll do that right now.

How do you achieve a healthy balance of independence in your life?
