Karma

I recently came across a list written by The Dalai Lama.  It was entitled “20 Ways to Get Good Karma.”  Number four was one that made the greatest impression on me.  It read, “Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.”  Isn’t that the truth?

The One That Got Away

Other blog posts of The Daily Tonic have alluded to the disappointments that occur in the life of a Realtor.  One of the biggest is when a homeowner chooses to work with another Realtor to sell their home.  It’s particularly bothersome when you know in your “heart of hearts” that you provide more affective marketing and better service than the Realtor who was chosen.

No One is Immune

If this hasn’t happened to you then you simply haven’t been in the business very long or have not been very active.  Otherwise, no Realtor remains unscathed.  From that perspective, you can be grateful that you are a member of the club.

The Stroke of Luck

In situations such as these, or any disappointment in life, it’s imperative that you let go of the good that you lost so that you can embrace the great.  And that is the stroke of luck that the Dalai Lama is referring to.  The one that you lost is seldom as good as what you imagined in your mind anyway.

Moving Forward

Some things to think about to help you move forward during situations alluded to above, when you felt that your meeting with the potential client went well but you just didn’t get the order.

  1. Ask the homeowner what they based their decision on.  It’s not awkward, it’s good business and a way for you to determine what you may need to improve upon.
  2. Determine the ways in which you performed better than when you actually did get the order.
  3. If the homeowner listed with someone who gave them an inflated price, take solace in knowing that you adhered to your principles.
  4. Use the time that you would have allocated to servicing the listing to prospecting for more business instead.

The new business that you do capture may very well include a more saleable home, owned by sellers who are more in tune with your business acumen and have a greater appreciation for all that you have to offer.

What other advice do you suggest in the scenario above?
