Moving From Here to There

Leadership blogger Dan Rockwell recently wrote that, “Before one makes a case as to why they should be ‘there,’  they need to understand why they shouldn’t be “here.”

The Business Conundrum

Stability is one of the conundrums that we face in the world of business.  As Realtors we feel that we have to be all things to all people.  Once we allow that mindset to creep into our personal lives, dissatisfaction and a feeling of emptiness sets in.  Why?  As management consultant expert Patrick Lencioni aptly puts it, “All things to all people is nothing to no one.”

Fight or Flight

For many, the lack of fulfillment that we experience by attempting to satisfy everyone leads some to re-evaluate there current situation.  That is a good thing.  Change for the sake of change, however, is not.  Asking yourself the following questions may provide some insight:

  • What do I need to be content – in life and in business?
  • What am I doing to make that happen?
  • What am I neglecting to do?
  • Are there outside forces impeding me from doing so?
  • What do I need to change to overcome those obstacles?
  • Is being “here” really dissatisfying or am I blaming others for my own shortcomings or inertia?
  • Will changing my situation bring me happiness, or am I simply looking for what I don’t have?
  • Is being “there” really the answer or is the answer within me?”

Separate quotes from two of history’s most famous women may help to add perspective:

“Happiness is a matter which depends fully as much on the state of things within, as on the state of things without and around us.” – Charlotte Bronte.

“Everything has it’s wonders, even darkness and silence, and I learn whatever state I am in, therein to be content.” – Helen Keller

How satisfied are you with your situation at work or in life?

Are the answers from within or without?
