One At A Time

A guest on one of the morning shows today is an expert on organization.  He advises CEOs of some of the largest corporations of the world.  He was asked by the host of the show to comment about the advise that he gives corporate leaders when it comes to productivity.

Brain Functioning

The guest suggested that both neuroligical and physiological studies show that the brain is only capable of fully engaging one task at a time.  Although many claim to have the ability to multi-task, the evidence simply doesn’t support that notion.  Multi-taksing serves to:

  1. Negatively affect efficiency
  2. Compormises Quality
  3. Increase Sloppiness

Rejuvenation

The organizational expert alluded to the importance of rejuvenation and recovery.  Athletes have ways in which to rejuvenate the body.  Rejuvenating the mind is equally as important, allowing it to recover with down time.  He drew a contrast with our daily lives today versus yesteryear.  He pointed out that a walk to the car was once a time of solitude, time away from work related responsibilities.  With the use of cell phones and laptops, there is no down time whatsoever unless you create it yourself.

Expectations

Another thing that we all need to do in order to optimize our organizational skills is to monitor our responsiveness to outside demands.  The most important task for Realtors in that regard is to manage their clients’ expectations.  A Realtor should set parameters for a client regarding the response time to the clients’ phone calls or emails.  It’s not in anyone’s best interest, particularly the client’s, for a Realtor to continually interupt their focus by returning phone calls and emails immediately upon receiving them throughout the entire day.

Closing Your Circles

I am perceived by my peers as one who is well organized and maintains structure to his day.  I work at it.  When asked to explain the secret, my answer is fairly consistent.  I tell others that I close my circles.  I try not to deviate from the task at hand until I have completed it.  I work at one thing at a time.

Are you happy with your organizational skills?

If not, do you intend to change?

If not, why not?
