Setting The Bar

I was speaking to one of the workers at a food store where I sometimes eat breakfast.  She was sitting at the table next ot me having coffee before starting her day.  She talked of how much respect she has for one of  the owner’s approach to doing business, commenting that of all the places that she interviewed a few years back, this was the only one at which she wanted to work.

The Best

I told her I think that the store makes the best desserts in the state of Connecticut.  Although I haven’t eaten at every single one, I’m quite confident that I’m correct.  She agreed, and offered her opinion as to the reasons for their superioity.

Standards:  The chef/owner has uniquely high standards.

The ingredients:  Fresh, and always made from scratch.

Education:  He attends cooking seminars often, continually refining his talents.

Creativity:  He regularly creates new desserts, consistently whetting the appetite of his customers.

Pride – He takes a huge amount of pride in his work and presents a finished product only if he thinks it’s perfect.

In fact, she told me that it is not uncommon for him to throw away an entire pastry tray if it fails to meet his expectations.

Example

The owner’s attitude and behavior are exemplary, and  should be employed by every business person who hopes to be a leader in their particular field.  In the real estate industry, a Realtor without high standards who is not prideful in meeting responsibilities to themselves and to their clients is doomed to mediocrity.  There are key ingredients to our success that must be mixed into our business model.  Education keeps us abreast of growing trends throughout the country and maintains sharpness of mind.  It is difficult to elevate your business and create separation from the competition without sprinkling in a dose of creativity into your strategy.

Without setting the bar beyond what we deem to be the realm of  our capabilities, we are doomed to an annual production that for most of us will be less than stellar and downright distasteful.

What characteristics above accurately describe what your business is about?

What can you add to your plan to achieve stellar results?
