Should Have

“The past can suck you in like black holes.”  – Dan Rockwell, Leadership Freak

Should Have

As business leaders prepare to put a bow on 2012, I hear a lot of regret in their voices.  Comments referring to what they feel they “should have done.”

Focusing on what you should have done is debilitating.  “Should have” demeans and debases your instincts.  You may have no greater asset than your instincts.

“You did what you did because you thought that it was the right thing to do at the time.” I respond.  Attempting to undue or correct what was done can stifle your passion and creativity moving forward.

The Model Is Paramount

As a Realtor, what is your business model?  Do you even know what it is?  Your business model is paramount to your productivity. Without a business model you become fully exposed to market fluctuations, to market trends, to buyer and seller habits.  With a well conceived business model, however, you become rather impervious to them.  Great organizations continue to excel dispite outside forces that they can’t control.

Steps To Great Focus

The “should have” mindset also impedes focus.  Focus differentiates those who do and those who don’t.

  • Block out time for activities upon which you would like to focus
  • Ensure that your environment supports your vision
  • Make process your focus
  • Partner for accountability

Do you try to create your future by re-creating your past?

How do you move forward from disappointment?
