Show Time

I waited to be seated at the restaurant where I had reservations.  I was excited for the evening, a unique venue featuring live opera during dinner.  While waiting, I heard a couple talking, and as the discussion progressed it seemed to get a bit heated.  He was attired in a black tuxedo and she a long black velvet dress.

Shortly after ordering appetizers, the singing began.  I had my back to the singers, and as I turned to watch – lo and behold, there they were  bellowing a capella, the same couple who held the lively conversation as I waited in the lobby.

Talent and Focus

They were so talented and their singing certainly gave dinner a different twist.  I thought about how talent often seems to overcome so many things.  Here they were, obviously on a different page just moments ago, yet their voices now in perfect harmony.  Dissonance is a good thing at times isn’t it?  It reminded me of teams that I have followed in the sports world over the years.  Some were comprised of teammates that darn near despised one another, yet they won championships.  It’s not ideal, and certainly more enjoyable if a particular group enjoys one another’s company without the drama.  Yet it speaks to the power of talent.  Sometimes disagreement inspires growth and healthy competition.  Some perform their best when it’s “show time.”

Differentiation

One last thing about the evening.  It was a Monday night and every table was filled, yet I merely attended the first of two seatings.  The food at this restaurant is very good, but the owner is savvy enough to know that good food is not enough to fill the restaurant on a Monday evening.  Like any business, differentiation is key.  Something to keep in mind as you strategize for 2013.

What type of environment do you thrive best in?

What are you doing to differentiate yourself?
