The Market Challenge

We are approaching election day, a day that many have earmarked as one that will have significant implications, at least in the short term, on the course of the real estate market.  Often projections about direction, however, are little more than that, projections.  Expert predictions about the stock market, the outcome of a sporting event, the weather.  We hear them daily, and yet what percentage of the time are they accurate.  Fifty/fifty at best?

Excuses

In many instances, future predictions are nothing more than excuses that help the individual(s) who use them feel better.  “Never make excuses.  Your friends don’t need them and your foes won’t believe them.”  – John Wooden

Recognized as the greatest coach of all time, in any sport, the University of California at Los Angeles’ legend John Wooden led with this mantra.

A Tell Tale Sign

I was once privy to a conversation involving an analyst and the CEO of a relatively new start-up.  Company earnings had just been reported and the results were disappointing,  well below Wall Street’s expectations.  It was January and the CEO attributed the company’s lackluster performance to the “short” holiday season, based on the day on which Christmas and New Year’s landed.  My instincts were that a company which was led by a person who believed that, was probably heading in the wrong direction.  The company is no longer solvent.

Outstanding Coaches

Successful leaders don’t make excuses.  Reflecting back on the sports world, I took note once when a coach was questioned about the plight of his team after they had just been decimated with injuries.  The coaches response,  “We have to move forward.  The teams we play don’t give a damn about our injuries.”

The Coach In You

As a Realtor you are the leader of your own business.  Its success or lack thereof depends on no one else but you.  The Presidential election is coming, the holidays are coming, the cold weather is coming and so is the fourth quarter.  The course that you take is up to you.  You can make your challenge to be about the market if you choose.  In actuality, however, the challenge is within you.
