The Power Of Consistency

I saw a former team member recently.  She’s now in a different industry and managing a business of her own.  We updated one another on our respective lives, family and friends.  At one point early in the conversation she looked at me and emphatically stated, “You know, now that I’m in a different position I have a greater respect for what you do.  I have such admiration for the way that you’re able to orchestrate things with such consistency.”

There’s That Word Again

I felt great after hearing her say that.  I suppose we all enjoy feeling appreciated.  The bigger lesson for me was to hear that word again – consistency.  It’s something that I forever have attempted to help others understand the importance of.  Nearly every ethical prospecting activity a Realtor can participate in has the potential to be effective – as long as it’s done consistently.

More Ways Than One

Consistency, in this case, not only refers to the effort, however.  It also includes the message.

  • Does your prospecting behavior coincide with your branding?
  • How consistent is your marketing message?

In a recent blog post, Dan Rockwell suggests, “Never allow what you can’t do obscure what you can.”  It’s another way of putting into words what I’ve always believed.  Don’t weigh yourself down with your weaknesses, just build on your strengths.  If you don’t follow that advice, it’s going to be very difficult to remain consistent.  If your sphere tends to own homes at the mid price point in your town, for example, and you’re hoping to penetrate the higher end of the market, it will be extremely difficult without a consistent plan.  Particularly so if you’re not building on one of your strengths in your attempt to do so.

Follow The Leader

The ones who are great at what they do always seem to make the difficult tasks look easy.  Sometimes even to the point where you start believing that they are?  Chances are that they reached the pinnacle of success through consistency.  It’s January and I’m going to follow the advice of iconic entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, “Now is the time to do.  In business, relationships, fitness – all walks of life.”

What ways have you been able to reap the rewards that consistency brings?  In business?  In life?
