Ride Your Wave

I was in real estate training school with an instructor for the company that I was about to join twenty-five years ago.  One particular day the owner of the company was present.  He introduced himself and briefly spoke.  He asked the students in the class if anyone knew the most important ingredient to success in real estate.  Most everyone raised their hand to offer an answer.  No one provided the response that he was looking for.

Resolve

“The key to success in real estate,”  he calmly stated, “is resolve.”  “Lack of resolve is the one reason that such a high percentage of Realtors drop out of the business during their first year.”

Failure

Failure is the nature of business.  Every business meets adversity at one time or another.  The power of positive thinking not withstanding, any business owner who refuses to acknowledge this fact is actually creating an unrealistic expectation for themselves.  Businesses that thrive are  those that become stronger in the face of misfortune.  Hotel magnate Bill Marriott once commented, ” An opportunist is one who finds the wolf at the front door and appears the next day wearing a fur coat.”

Accepting Mediocrity

Adversity should not only be welcomed, but embraced.  It may lead your business into a temporary state of mediocrity, but it will only last if you allow it to.  Adversity reveals your weaknesses, and if you’re truly determined to succeed, inspires you to improve upon them.  Or it propels you to do what I prefer to do, which is to build upon and leverage my strengths.

Don’t Despair

There will be many properties contracted and closing within the next 90 days.  If you are a full time realtor, you are likely observing your office mates and other Realtors conducting a lot of business.  Hopefully you are too.  If not, you needn’t despair.  All Realtors and business people have their down periods.  Your business will not be made or broken over the course of a season, or even a year.  The statement made by the Broker of the company is as accurate today as it was twenty-five years ago.  Resolve is the key to your success.  That includes riding the wave that you’re on, even when it’s not as robust as you would like, and persevering until it’s healthier than ever.
