Tiger Woods

On Sunday it finally happened.  It took more than two and a half years, 924 days to be exact.  Tiger Woods finally won his first PGA tournament since the most acrimonious “fender bender” in American history, occuring in November of 2009.

Doubters Aplenty

There were many naysayers.  Winning at golf entails much more than physical ability and skill.  There is arguably a greater mental component to golf than any other sport.  The silence of thousands of fans as the golfer stands over the ball preparing to hit a 300 yard drive or a 5 foot putt can be deafening.  It can also play havoc on the player’s mental state.  “Paralysis by analysis” as it is sometimes referred.  A perceived fragility of Woods’ emotional state, due to the avalanche of publicity that he absorbed for his “transgressions,” had many believing that it was more than any human would be able to bear, much less continue to win at the record setting pace as he had throughout his career.

Practice

Another factor that played a role in Woods’ long drought was his inability to develop any type of rhythm to his practice routine.  He suffered injury upon injury, interrupting his schedule often.  This during a period when the ever-coach able legend hired a new swing coach, thus practice time was more crucial than ever.

Determination

One thing that’s nearly impossible to gauge is the depth and scope of a competitor’s determination.  In that regard, Woods is second to none.  And it certainly showed in yesterday’s event.  It’s difficult at best to understand what drives someone.  Perhaps, in Woods’ case, he found extra motivation with the pending release of a book from his previous coach, Hank Haney, doubting if Woods would ever be great again.

Focus

Also unparalleled is Woods’ focus, as an essential ingredient to winning a golf tournament as trust, support and communication are to a healthy relationship.

As Woods made his final putt on the 18th green, a wide grin beamed across his face, he turned toward the over sized gallery, clenched his fist and bellowed two consecutive sounds that emanated from somewhere below the depths of his soul.

Never underestimate the heart of a champion, or the power of one’s will to win.
