A Day To Remember

September 11 is a day to remember on so many levels.  I suppose that, for the past two years, many families of the victims have felt a  measure of vindication with the death of Osama Bin Laden.  A recently released account of the day that the terrorist mastermind met his fate, No Easy Day, describes the challenges of the mission.

Teamwork

Written under the pseudo name Mark Owen, the former Navy Seal who was part of that mission, the book brings to mind the importance of teamwork.  As recounted by the author during this past Sunday’s episode of 60 Minutes, Owens was quick to point out that those who were involved wouldn’t reveal the name of the trigger men even when asked by President Obama.  They’re wise enough to understand that everyone who made up the team was instrumental in the success of the operation.

I gained another perspective on teamwork this week when speaking to my youngest son who decided to play for his high school football team this year.  He looked particularly tired after practice.  I asked him how it went.  He said that the team had done an exorbitant amount of running that day.  Two of the players were late.  My experience in sports has been that those two players would be the one to feel the pain for their tardiness.  Not so on this team.  On this team, it’s one for all and all for one.  “Interesting,” I thought.

Indisputable

Perhaps Henry Ford said it best, “If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.”  In one respect or another, the entire organization is instrumental in your success, whatever organization that is.  In most cases that is indisputable.  For those of you who are at the pinnacle of your career, don’t ever lose that thought.

Most importantly, don’t ever forget the men and women who’ve made it possible for us to exercise our freedom to do what we needed to become that success.  Or the sacrifices that they’ve made.
