In yesterday’s blog I discussed two critical elements to the framework of a successful business plan. To support the crux of my article, I used two quotes from two of history’s most formidable military leaders, Napoleon Bonaparte and George S. Patton.
Perfect Discipline:
I had read works by both icons when we first opened the doors of our current real estate office in Fairfield, Ct. Some of what I read stuck with me until the opening of our Darien, Ct. office three years ago and even to this very day. One quote in particular got my attention. It was from Patton, proven to him during his years on the battlefield. It read, “There is only one sort of discipline, perfect discipline.”
Questions of Doubt
The statement caught my attention for some reason though I wasn’t quite sure what he meant. I then thought about it, not only in terms of its application to real estate but also to life. “Do my life experiences really prove this to be true?”, I wondered. I didn’t want to acknowledge it. I wanted to believe that I could intermittenlty coast and still attain my goals, however lofty they may be.
George was Right Again
It was the beginning of a new year. I wasn’t ready to wait twelve months as I would have had to if I simply monitored my real estate goals. I wanted more immediate evidence. I decided to monitor my exercise routine instead, at times working out at 5:00AM before bringing my children to school and at times sleeping-in untill 6:00 with the intention of exercising at the end of the day.
It rarely worked. By the end of the day, almost without exception, I was either too tired or arrived home too late to get my daily workout routine in. George was right again. The only way for me to maintain consistency with my exercise program was to do it the same time every day.
Consider The Implications
When writing your 2012 business plan, whether it involves your workout schedule, calling expireds, personal promotion or a routine of connecting with your sphere, consider the implications of Patton’s words. The only successful plan is one that includes discipline, and perfect discipline at that!
