Patton, Bonaparte and Your Business Plan

In yesterday’s blog, Understanding Agent Branding, I touched upon the importance of a business plan.  Today I am going to write briefly about two critical elements to the framework of your plan, drawing on the experience of two renowned military leaders, Napoleon Bonaparte and General George S. Patton.

Bonaparte:

One of Bonaparte’s most famous quotes, “Over preparation is the foe of inspiration,” was uttered while he was discussing the battle front, yet he easily could have been alluding to life in general and may as well have been talking about your business plan.  There’s a delicate balance, in war and in life, to being prepared for everything, but not getting so bogged down in preparation that it stifles your creativity.  Simplified, the underpinnings of your plan should consider the possiblity of things that you can’t control, such as the state of the market, yet at the same time you don’t want them to allow them to paralyze you, impeding alacrity and innovation.

Patton

The essence of  Patton’s strategy was very similar to Bonapart’s, with a subtle twist.  Patton commented, “A good plan executed today is better than a perfect plan executed next week.”  If there is anything that I’ve learned over the years to be true, it certainly is this.  People, Realtors in particular, often attempt to conceptualize, create and execute a plan as if the future were as clear as a cloudless summer day.   Nothing could be further from the truth.

The Entreprenuer’s Mantra

Successful entreprenuers come in many shapes and sizes and become successful for many different reasons. There’s one thing, however, that they almost all have in common.  That is their knack for seizing the moment.  They act on an opportunity when it presents itself and then formulate a strategy around it, operating within the confines of their existing strengths.
