Finishing Off the Run

As the year comes to a close, I’m reminded of a comment once made by Hall of Fame football coach and announcer John Madden.  Madden was the color commentator for a playoff game involving the Chicago Bears in the mid- 80″s.  He was discussing that which separates a good running back from a great running back.  “The great ones,” Madden barked, “know how to fininsh off a run.  They don’t simply scamper out of bounds or slow down when it looks as if they are going to be tackled.  They actually appear to increase their speed and momentum, and try to hit the tackler harder then they anticipate being hit.  That gives them those extra few yards that make the difference.”

The Holidays

Working out of both offices that I operate, this week I similarly thought of something I learned my very first year in the business in 1987.  I was sitting opportunity time as a single agent, long before I formed a separate group.  The office had approximately 60 agents at the time.  It was late December and I was the only agent in the office.   The owner of the company saw me as he was leaving.  We briefly chatted and he reflected on an occasion when he was a single agent/owner working with just a few others in his small office.  It was Christmas Eve and he received a call to show a home.  The potential buyer was the head of a large relocation enterprise.  That call-in resulted in an exclusive deal with his small firm and the relocation company.   The value of that contact became immeasurable.

The Present

This week has been busy.  There have been call-ins, referrals, leads from real estate websites and even one from our twitter account.  People are already making their real estate plans and preparing to get their home on the market for January.   The agents who have been coming into the office this week are reaping the benefits.  They’re finishing off their 2011 run.  It’s going those few extra yards that will make the difference between a good year and one that is great in 2012..
