Don’t Lose You

Business relationships, and perhaps the dynamics of all relationships, are so intriguing.  There is much written, and an abundance of information available, on what constitutes a healthy relationship.

An Area of Discontent

One of the areas that is most challenging to Realtors, especially those who are relatively new to the business, is discovering their “voice” in a very crowded marketplace.  Even experienced agents continuously hear about the things they need to do and what it takes to meet with success.  Yet if those activities and behaviors don’t coincide with who you are as an individual, the tasks before you can be daunting and make you squirm at best.

A Comforting Realization

When I first entered the real estate business I had no idea what to expect.  Except for selling more booster tickets than anyone in Little League when I was 10, 11 and 12 years old, I had zero business or sales experience.  I wondered if making a living selling real estate was going to require being a “pushy” salesperson.  “If that’s the case,” I thought, “my prospects for success would be dismal.”  A disingenuous fast talker just wasn’t the fabric of who I am.

I learned quickly, however, that being thorough and being an aggressive salesperson were two totally different things – and thoroughness certainly put me on the right track.

Self-Esteem and Contentment

It was a relief to find that I could maintain authenticity in my prospecting and still provide the knowledge, service and expertise that clients expected.  Futhermore, I learned that maintaining genuiness not only can bring success, it increases one’s self-esteem and contentment in life.

In business or any relationship for that matter, happiness is difficult to maintain if you lose you.

Have you had relationships where you felt as if the client was in control and you were losing yourself?

How did you deal with them?
