What It Takes In Real Estate

As real estate buyer confidence seems to grow and parts of the country experience an increase in pricing for the first time since 2007, more people are thinking of “throwing their hat into the ring” by taking the real estate course and becoming a licensed realtor.  Similarly to many classes taken in college, the course content of the Principles and Practice class has little to do with success in the field.

For those of you contemplating such an endeavor, below is a perspective on the importance of twelve specifics things that you should be aware of in deciding whether the real estate business is for you.

Prospecting Skills – You won’t survive without them.

Intelligence – Helpful but not necessary.

Competitiveness – A real plus and virtual requirement.

Thoroughness – Again helpful but not necessary for success.

Business Background – Serves as a big advantage.

Drive – Either by need for income or desire for success, drive is a must.

Professional Appearance – Can’t hurt but disappointingly enough not necessary.

Articulate – Depends on the niche that you cultivate.

Considerate – As long as it doesn’t impede a competitive edge.

Calm Demeanor – Not necessary.

Highly Organized – Once again can be helpful but not necessary.

Analytical – Actually a detriment.  While you are analyzing, others are securing the business.

Reality

It may seem astounding that some of the above traits are not crucial to your succes.  That is due to the volume of business that there is to be had.  Some of the characteristics would certainly negate repeat business in most cases.  But again, while helpful to have and certainly disappointing not to,  the volume of business in real estate allows for success even without repeat business.

Positive Approach

No need to be discouraged if you have most of the traits above.  They certainly won’t be a disadvantage if you don’t allow them to be.  But make no mistake.  The three that you must have to be one of the elite Realtors in your area are competiveness, drive and prospecting skills.

What do you think your prospects for success are based on the list above?

Do you have strengths that you think will be helpful but are not listed?
